Nevada drivers are facing upcoming changes to school zone traffic penalties. Starting July 1, 2026, the penalties for an infraction in an active school zone are going to be much more severe. This is all part of the new Nevada school-zone fines, which are designed to help keep kids safer on the roads. The Las Vegas personal injury lawyers at ER Injury Attorneys are here with the information you need when it comes to these Nevada double-penalty school-zone fines.
What AB6 Is All about with New Nevada School-Zone Fines
AB6 focuses on two main areas:
- Increasing penalties for breaking the law in school zones
- Giving local governments more power to make school zones safer
And the one thing that will probably affect most drivers is the creation of Nevada double-penalty school-zone fines for infractions.
Paying the Price: Double Fines and Double Demerit Points
Under this new law, any traffic violation committed in a school zone or a school crossing zone is going to be punished with double the normal fines and points.
Fines
If you get caught speeding, make an illegal U-turn or pass another vehicle in an active school zone, you’re going to get twice the normal fine. And the more serious the offense, the bigger the price tag is going to be.
Demerit Points
That’s not all–the law will also double the standard penalty of demerit points for school zone infractions. So if what used to be a three-point infraction is committed in a school zone, you’ll now be looking at six points.
This could mean that you lose your license much quicker than before.
When Is a School Zone Active?
To clear up confusion, the state has provided this information on active school zones:
- Flashing Beacons: If the yellow school zone lights are on, that’s considered an active school zone.
- Posted Hours: This is active during the designated arrival and drop off times–usually 30 minutes before and after the school day.
- Children present: Anytime kids are around the road, even if it’s not part of the standard school day.
It’s no longer a case of ‘I didn’t know’ when this new law comes into effect.
Behaviors Banned in School Zones
AB6 has also reinforced some of the banned behaviors in school zones–including passing another vehicle, making U-turns, and speeding or driving unsafely. And if you are guilty of one of these infractions in an active school zone, be prepared to pay double the price.
When Do the New Nevada School-Zone Fines Kick In?
- Passed: November 2025
- Signed by Governor: November 29, 2025
- Effective Date: July 1, 2026
This means that by the time the 2026-2027 school year gets underway, everyone will be aware of the new rules in school zones.
